Chapter 2

MARGARET BUCKINGHAM

For a long time, I have not thought very highly of my great grandmother, she took the children to the orphans home just a day or 2 after their father died, she left the 2 girls to die in a field, and once when Charles saw her he ran up to her and called her mother she slapped him across the face and said you’re not my child. Charles remembered this and told Noel about it. Consequently, I really didn’t like her very much at all. But as I researched her I found that the family lived in a lean to behind the church in Ouse, it was also the storage shed for his mattock and spade, as soon as John died she lost her home as it was given to the man who took on Johns job, as she had nowhere to live so took the children to Hobart.

Margaret took all the children that were at home to the orphans home in Hobart the home took in the boys, William, David and Charles, but told her to take the 2 girls home as the baby was too young to take in and they had no space for the other girl. Margaret later deserted the 2 young girls by leaving them in a field out of the town where there was little chance that they would be found before they died from exposure, but they were found by the local constable and taken to the home the boys were taken to, this time they were accepted as the home really had no choice.

Margaret was charged with desertion of the 2 girls and a warrant was issued for her arrest. The police gazette Friday 5th Feb 1892 note the name is now Blegg

The records from the children’s home in looking at the condition of the girls asked the constable to arrest the mother for desertion of the 2 girls.

the handwriting is on the original copy available on the internet.

There will be a chapter for each of the Blegg Children so they will not be listed here.

This shows that by now she was living in a tent with a man we find is Charles Marsh, he is lame so possibly not doing manual labour, and they have a baby it is the 1st of their 4 children. Part of what is hard to read says wearing a drab rush hat, descriptions are very detailed as mostly there were no photos

TASMANIAN NEWS MONDAY 22 FEB 1892

For deserting her children she received 14 days in jail. At the end of the line it says Free Widow. The word Free means she did not arrive in Tasmania as a convict. And Widow means she is not actually married to Charles Marsh, but the widow of John Blegg. She served her 14 days in 1992.

Charles Marsh was a convict he arrived on the Earl Grey was tried in Dorchester and received 10 years, on the same ship was a Benjamin Marsh also tried Dorchester who received 15 years, they may have been related and both involved in the one crime.

Margaret had 4 children to Charles Marsh there is no record of their marriage taking place anywhere in Australia, that I can find. The police were looking for Mrs Margaret Blegg, there was a warrant for her arrest, she was now, calling herself Margaret Buckingham. The record that heads the record of her children shows that she was with Charles Marsh from 1890 and the names of her 4 daughters. She lived with Charles Marsh until her death

The existence of these children is important as they would be half-sisters to Charles, David, and the other 7 Bleggs.

After the birth there is no listing for Fancy Pearl Wiggins at all but there is a listing for a Daisy Pearl Wiggins listed at Sorell Tasmania so either Fancy was wrongly written and it should have been Daisy or she didn’t like the name Fancy and changed her name to Daisy as it sounds similar
