Granddad and the mountain
I was young and visiting granddad he lived in Moonah town
in Tasmania and near Hobart where the yachts came in after a race quite grand
Well every day outside the front door a mountain was in clear view
Granddad said it was Mt Wellington named after a duke or two!
So each day as the front door opened he would greet the mountain and bow
When I asked him why he greeted it , he told me with a smile
That he wanted the mountain to stay there and if it knows I like it it may never duck off.
Well one day the door was opened and I could see that the mountain was gone,
I got quite upset and asked granddad why the mountain had gone away, he told me perhaps it’s not gone for every perhaps it will come back today.
He told me that if I called it it might return before lunch, so I stood out the front in the cold calling Mt Wellington back.
Then grandma said lunch was ready so I had to go inside, but I hoped the mountain would return for granddad looked rather sad.
The moment that lunch was over I ran out the front door to find that the mountain was back where it should
Granddad seemed quite happy about it and I asked him why did it go, he said twas OK as God told him he lifted it to sweep under it so
God wanted the mountain to be nice and clean so picked it up on an occasion to keep it nice and tidy,
On that trip it happened a few more times granddad said Gods just keeping things tidy it will be back later just wait and see.
In the meantime go read a book or play with the cat inside
It’s way to cold and icey a little girl your size outside.
From that time on till I was older I believed what granddad said that somedays the mountain just couldn’t be seen because god was sweeping under it instead.
I found oh so much later it was just a heavy fog , for clouds dropped down over the mountain , it was hidden to all but God.
